OEM parts are built by the same manufacturer that made your vehicle, to the exact specifications of your specific model. That precise fit means better long-term performance than most aftermarket alternatives, even when the aftermarket option costs less upfront, because a part designed around your car's exact dimensions and materials integrates better with everything around it.
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. An OEM part is designed and built by, or for, your vehicle's automaker to match the specifications of the part it's replacing. Aftermarket parts come from third-party companies aiming for a similar fit and function, and quality varies a lot between brands. Some aftermarket manufacturers make parts on the same production lines as the automaker under a different label, so quality isn't automatically worse across the board. The real problem is inconsistency: a shopper has no easy way to tell a well-made aftermarket part from a poorly made one just by looking at the box.
Because OEM parts are engineered around your exact model, they tend to install cleanly without the shimming, trimming, or adjusting that aftermarket parts sometimes require. That precision matters most for anything tied to safety or drivability, like brake components, sensors, and body panels, where a slightly off fit can affect how the part performs over time. A body panel that's off by even a few millimeters can throw off door and hood gaps, and a headlight housing that doesn't seal correctly can let moisture in over time. Problems like these often don't show up on day one, so a small tolerance gap at installation can turn into a bigger issue months later.
Genuine parts installed by a dealership's service department are typically backed by their own warranty, separate from coverage on aftermarket parts. That warranty typically covers both the part and the labor to install it, which isn't always true of a part bought elsewhere and installed at an independent shop. Aftermarket warranty coverage varies widely and sometimes doesn't exist at all. Paying more upfront for a part that's warrantied and built to spec often costs less over the life of the vehicle than replacing a cheaper part twice.
Some parts are worth the OEM price more than others. A few worth calling out:
Aftermarket parts aren't automatically a bad choice. For cosmetic accessories or parts with little effect on safety or performance, a reputable aftermarket brand can be a reasonable way to save money. A well-reviewed aftermarket brand with a real warranty of its own is a reasonable middle ground, especially for parts you're comfortable replacing again if needed. Weigh the fit, the warranty coverage, and how the part might affect resale value or a future inspection, especially for anything visible or safety-related.

A used car with a documented history of OEM parts and dealership service tends to appraise higher than one with an unclear mix of aftermarket repairs, since a buyer or appraiser can verify what was actually installed. Insurance claims can get complicated too: some policies specify OEM parts for a covered repair, while others default to aftermarket unless you request otherwise, so it's worth reading your policy before an accident happens, not after.
Genuine parts ship in manufacturer-branded packaging with a part number that a dealership parts department can look up against your vehicle identification number. A price that's unusually low for a supposedly genuine part is worth a second look, since counterfeit parts do circulate, especially online. Buying through a dealership parts department removes most of that risk, since the part comes straight from the manufacturer's supply chain instead of through a reseller of unknown origin.
