Light surface scratches and small, shallow dents are often fixable at home with basic tools and a bit of patience. Deep scratches that reach bare metal need a body shop, and so does a dent with a sharp crease or one near a sensor or body seam. A DIY attempt on either can end up costing more to fix than the original damage.
Not every scratch needs a trip to the shop. If it's shallow and only affects the clear coat, a few driveway methods can make it far less noticeable. A good rule of thumb before starting any of these: test on a small, hidden area first, like inside the door jamb, so a mistake doesn't show.
Candle wax and super glue are sometimes mentioned as quick fixes, but they're only temporary. Wax fills the scratch enough to hide it briefly, and glue slightly blends the damage, but neither actually repairs the surface, so they only mask it instead of fixing it.
If a scratch has reached bare metal, or you can feel a groove with a fingernail, it's past what sanding and polish can fix. Exposed metal rusts quickly, especially in areas with rain or road salt. A technician should look at it before you rely on a touch-up pen alone.
A dent doesn't automatically mean a trip to the body shop. A few tools can handle smaller ones without much risk:
Dents with sharp creases, dents near a door edge or body line, dents on panels with sensors or trim underneath, and anything larger than the palm of your hand are all better left to a technician. Pushing on the wrong spot can stretch the metal further or crack paint in a wider area than the original dent, turning a simple fix into a full panel repair. If you're not sure which category a specific dent falls into, a quick photo sent to a service advisor can usually settle it before you spend an afternoon on a fix that won't hold.
For a shallow dent with unbroken paint, a body shop may recommend paintless dent repair instead of a full panel repaint. A technician accesses the back of the panel and gently massages the metal back into shape using specialized tools, without needing to sand, fill, or repaint anything. It's often faster and less expensive than a traditional repair, but it only works when the paint itself is intact and the metal hasn't stretched too far to spring back.

Once a scratch or dent is fixed, a coat of wax or sealant helps protect the repaired area and blend it with the surrounding paint. Avoid automated car washes with stiff brushes for a few weeks after any bodywork, since they can be rougher on fresh paint or filler than a hand wash.
Parking at the end of a row, away from shopping carts and other doors, avoids a large share of the small dings that show up in a parking lot. Tight garages and narrow driveways are common sources of door-edge scratches, so a few extra feet of clearance when you park at home matters more than most people expect. A breathable car cover helps in areas with heavy tree sap, bird activity, or dust, though a garage is the better option when one's available, since a cover dragged on and off daily can introduce its own light scuffing over time.
When a scratch or dent goes beyond what a driveway fix can handle, Frontier Toyota's collision center in Valencia can assess the damage and match the repair to your vehicle's factory paint and finish. You can schedule service online for an estimate, or reach out through our contact page with photos of the damage before you bring the vehicle in.
