An oil filter removes metal particles, dirt, and combustion byproducts from your engine oil as it circulates, keeping that oil doing its job for the full length of the service interval. A genuine Toyota oil filter is matched to your engine's flow rate and oil capacity, and it should be replaced every single time your oil is changed.
Oil picks up contaminants as it moves through the engine: tiny metal shavings from normal wear, soot from combustion, and dirt that slips past the intake system. The oil filter traps those particles so they do not keep circulating and grinding against bearings, cylinder walls, and other moving parts. Without a working filter, oil would carry that debris right back through the engine on every pass.
Depending on the engine, the oil filter is mounted low on the engine block, accessible from underneath the vehicle, or up near the top of the engine as part of a cartridge housing. Every oil filter also has a bypass valve built in. If the filter media ever becomes fully clogged, that valve opens and lets oil keep flowing around the filter instead of starving the engine of lubrication entirely. It is a safety measure, not a substitute for regular replacement, since oil that bypasses the filter is unfiltered while it does.
An oil filter has to handle a specific flow rate and pressure range for your exact engine. A genuine Toyota filter is built to those specifications, with filter media rated for your oil capacity and a gasket sized to seal properly against the housing. A mismatched aftermarket filter can restrict flow, fail to seal, or use filter media that lets smaller particles through, all of which shorten the useful protection a fresh oil change is supposed to provide.
Toyota uses two main oil filter designs across its lineup. Spin-on filters are a single sealed unit that threads directly onto the engine and comes off as a whole piece, metal canister included. Cartridge filters are a separate housing with a replaceable filter element inside, secured by an internal cap, so only the element and its gasket get replaced instead of an entire metal shell. Which one your Toyota uses depends on the engine. Using the correct type and the correct torque on the housing or cap matters for a proper seal.
A fresh filter installed with old, degraded oil defeats the purpose, and old oil run through a fresh filter still starts the interval with a filter that is already partially loaded with whatever was left behind. That is why oil and filter changes happen together at every service visit instead of on separate schedules. Skipping the filter to save time means the new oil is contaminated again almost immediately, which shortens the real benefit of the service you just paid for.

An oil filter that is leaking, cross threaded, or installed without a proper seal on the gasket usually shows up quickly, often as a drop of oil under the car within a day or two of service. A sudden dip in oil level between changes, a burning smell after a fresh oil change, or an oil pressure warning light are all reasons to bring the vehicle back right away instead of waiting for the next scheduled visit. These issues are rare with a correctly installed genuine filter, but they are worth knowing so you can catch one early if it ever happens.
A spin-on filter is tightened by hand until the gasket makes contact, then turned a specific additional amount, usually a fraction of a full turn past that point. A cartridge filter's cap is tightened to a specific torque value with a wrench. Overtightening either one can crush the gasket and cause a slow leak. Undertightening can let the gasket seat unevenly, which does the same thing. This is one more reason a trained technician installing a genuine filter beats guessing at it in a driveway with no torque reference.
